A population of sites is needed to read-out accurate category and identity information that is invariant to scale and position changes

Classification performance for categorization (A) and identification (B) as a function of the number of sites used to train the classifer. The solid lines show the performance upon training and testing on the same scale and position whereas the dashed lines show the performance upon training at one scale/position and testing at all other scale/position combinations (see also "invariance" for the performances separated by different training sets). Number of sites used to train the classifier = 64, time interval = 100 to 300 ms after stimulus onset, bin size = 50 ms. The dashed lines indicate chance performance (1/8 in A, 1/77 in B). The error bars next to the dashed lines show the range of performances of the classifier using the 100 ms before stimulus onset (control). Error bars show SD for n=20 random choices of the sites used to train the classifier.
