Relative motif orientation and order was less important for more palindromic motifs. For each motif (total of 139 motifs), the y-axis indicates the number of motif pairs
in which it was involved that exhibited significant order/orientation pattern biases. The x-axis shows the palindromicity index of the motif (see Methods in the main text).
There is a small but highly significant inverse correlation between these values (r = -0.38, p < 0.0002 obtained by randomly shuffling the palindromicity indices).
This suggests that motifs with higher palindromicity indices tended to be involved in fewer motif pairs with order/orientation pattern biases (cf. Supplementary Figure 3).
