TopSpecific wiring significantly improves performance
Read-out performance as a function of the number of sites for categorization (top) or identification (bottom) using randomly selected sites (red) or pre-selected sites (blue). For a given site and a given group, the SNR was defined as the difference between the mean response to that group and the mean response to other groups divided by the sum of the standard deviations of the group and non-group responses. This yielded a list of the "top" sites for each read-out task. Sites were ranked based on the SNR and the sites with the highest SNR were selected in the "pre-selected sites" case.
